Björn Weckström: The Visionary of Finnish Jewelry Design

Björn Weckström (born 1935) is a Finnish sculptor and jewelry designer known for his bold, sculptural approach to jewelry and his innovative use of materials. As a pioneer of modern Finnish design, he has played a crucial role in transforming jewelry from mere decoration into wearable art.

Weckström studied at the Finnish Goldsmith School and gained international recognition through his collaboration with the renowned Finnish jewelry brand Lapponia. His designs often draw inspiration from the Nordic landscape, featuring rugged, organic forms and a matte gold finish reminiscent of the natural textures of Finland. One of his most famous creations is the ”Planetoid Valleys” necklace, worn by Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977).

Beyond jewelry, Weckström has also created sculptures in glass and bronze, further demonstrating his artistic versatility. His work is featured in major museum collections worldwide, and his influence on contemporary jewelry design remains profound.
